A Legacy of Excellence: Riverside FC’s Storied History

Founded in 1975, Riverside Football Club was born out of the Glenwood High School Old Boys Club, a humble but determined group of football enthusiasts. What began as a soccer section has since transformed into a resilient and competitive club with a deep-rooted culture and legacy in South African football.

Starting in the lowest tier of the Natal Football Association, Riverside worked its way through the ranks, reaching Division 1 by 1983. Just two years later, they earned promotion into the Natal League—an achievement that marked their growing presence in the local football landscape.

The early 1990s were a particularly bright period for Riverside. The club clinched the Natal League Cup in 1991 under the leadership of coach Trevor Mussell and witnessed the emergence of top talents like Troye Bingham, who was selected for the Natal U19 team in 1987. These milestones were not just about victories—they reflected a strong club culture built on teamwork, community spirit, and the drive to compete at the highest levels.

In 1992, Riverside entered a new chapter by joining the Southern Natal FA Premier League. With excellent facilities and a roster of experienced players and coaching staff, the club solidified its presence as a key force in regional football. Their commitment to development and strategic leadership has played a pivotal role in ensuring long-term success and stability.

Fast forward to 2023, and Riverside underwent a major transformation—ushering in a new era with refreshed leadership, updated branding, and a modernized vision. With a bold new logo and an energetic reconstitution of its structure, the club has positioned itself for sustained growth while continuing to honor the values that have defined it for nearly five decades.

The 2025 Kit: Palermo in Yellow and Royal Blue

For the upcoming season, Riverside FC will step onto the pitch in the Palermo design—an energetic fusion of modern design and athletic functionality. The chosen palette of yellow and royal blue is bold, iconic, and unmistakably Riverside. It’s a visual statement that honours the club’s roots while symbolizing its forward-looking spirit.

But this isn’t just about colours—it’s about performance. Every Palermo kit worn by Riverside this season will be crafted using Besteam Sport’s 100% Pro-Dry functional polyester. This premium material is engineered for the demands of the modern game:

  • Lightweight and quick-drying, Pro-Dry keeps players comfortable from the first whistle to the final minute.

  • Mesh paneling on the back enhances breathability and helps regulate body temperature during intense match play.

  • Embossed front panel and a silhouette graphic on the shoulders elevate the kit’s visual identity without compromising on feel or flexibility.

  • A dual-colour neck collar rounds off the design with sleek, contemporary style—perfectly blending fashion with performance.

The result? A game-day jersey that performs under pressure and stands out in the crowd.

Whether playing under the lights or in front of a home crowd, Riverside’s players will be equipped with apparel designed to bring out their best.
